The City of Mustard Cheese and Wine

Dijon is the historical capital of the province of Burgundy. It is the capital of the region of Burgundy and is a great city full of interesting things to do and places to meet.

In the past,it once hosted the Formula 1 French Grand Prix.

Dijon is famous for its mustard and of course, is renowned for its fabulous wine and cheese.

Dijons public transportation is excellent. The city is a major university city, so bus schedules are planned with student holidays in mind, but the centre of Dijon is small and best explored on foot.

The streets surrounding Les Halles are full of fascinating shops from elegant clothes and shoes to patisserie and of course, mustard. The Amora Maille Mustard shop is at 32 Rue de la Liberte, and Mulot et Petitjean which sells pain de spices, the spiced breads and cakes famous in Dijon is at 13 Place Bossuet.

Dijon possesses one of the most urban beautiful architectures in France.

The most striking cluster of buildings is Dijons three central churches, built one after the other for three distinct parishes.

The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy, over looking the relaxing Place de la Liberation is the former Dukes' Palace. Today the Palace houses the citys Hotel de Ville Town Hall, world class Musee des Beaux Arts Fine Arts Museum, and the delicately carved tombs of dukes Philippe le Hardi Philip the Brave and Jean sans Peur Fearless John are inside.

The Chateau d'Entre Deux Monts was founded by the Duke of Burgundy in about the year 1000. It was built in the style of Louis VIII and was embellished in 1733 with the addition of a park graced with an cold room and orangey. In side the Chateau are the dovecote, the moat, the stables and the inner courtyards of the park. The chateau is open throughout the year.

Dijon s symbol is the Owl, which is sculpted into a cornice of Notre Dames flying buttresses on rue de la Chouette know as Owl Street. Give it a stroke as you make a wish.

The Christmas market in Dijon Burgundyis held November 28 to December 24. It is held in the Christmas market at Place de la Liberation offering a host of over 60 stalls offering local products from spice bread, mustard, foie gras and honey, plus colourful arts and crafts, childrens toys and mulled wine. Visitors can glide on ice at the ice skating rink at the place de la Republique.
